World University QS Ranking

World University QS Ranking Shows 4 out of the Top 6 Universities in the World are in the UK

This ranking is based on reputation and research.

While MIT came top, Harvard moved down the table to 4th and was overtaken by Cambridge and Imperial in 2nd and 3rd respectively. UCL and Oxford were placed in joint 5th place with an equal score for their performance.

UK universities also did well overall, with Manchester moving up into the top 30. King's College London, Bristol, Warwick and Sheffield also moved up the ranking while Edinburgh held its position at number 17.

THE University Reputation Rankings 2013-14

The new rankings for worldwide universities by reputation were published today by Times Higher Education.

The US continues to dominate the top 10 by reputation with seven of the highest scores. However, with Oxford and Cambridge in the top 5, and 9 universities in the top 100, the UK is the second most reputable country according to academic experts.. 

Imperial College London has dropped one position to joint 14th. Meanwhile, other UK institutions have risen in the poll: University College London (UCL) rose by one place to 20th, the London School of ­Economics(LSE) rises four places to 25th), the University of Edinburgh is now ranked 46th and the University of ­Manchester breaks into the top 50 at 47th).

Congratulations to the University of Melbourne, now ranked 39th in the world. Other universities in Australia are also doing well. Notably, University of New South Wales and Monash University are both now in the top 100 and Australian National University has risen to joint 42nd.

While students have many other factors to consider when choosing a university for study (cost, location and course being among the most important), many agree that international reputation is a useful benchmark, despite being purely based on opinion.
