C: took pictures of the shark on their cellphones
3. The parents
A: were frightened by the children
B: were tourists
C: saw the shark in a small river
Explanation
Notice how each correct answer uses different vocabulary and grammar from the report.
1. B: the coast of Australia = an Australian beach
Question 1 is also testing whether you can hear the difference between AUSTRIAN and AUSTRALIAN. Question like this with similar sounding words are common, especially with numbers such as 13/30, 14/40, 15/50 and so on.
2. A: didn't run away from the shark = didn't flee
This question tests that you can listen for the negation (NOT). If you only hear the word FLEE, you may get the answer wrong. If you hear DIDN'T FLEE then you will realise that the meaning is the same as A they DIDN'T RUN AWAY.
3. (the parents) saw the shark in a small river = The shark was also spotted in the shallow waters of a creek by frightened parents
This question involves SYNONYMS (SAW= SPOTTED, SMALL RIVER=CREEK), and also a change in the grammar and the order of information. Be prepared for information to be in a different order.
Examiner's Tip
Make sure you think about different ways to say the different options in multiple choice questions. Try rewriting the options using different grammar and vocabulary.
If you hear the same words, the answer may not be correct.
Listen for the overall meaning, not just individual vocabulary words.
