Computers and modems have made it possible for office workers to do much of their work from home instead of working in offices every day. Working from home should be encouraged as it is good for workers and employers.       Do you agree or disagree?

It is certainly the case that personal computers with fast internet connections have enabled office employees to telecommute instead of travelling to the workplace every day. I agree that this should be encouraged since it reduces costs for employers and allows employees to spend more time with their families.

As long as employees are not needed to be in the workplace, telecommuting can result in significant cost savings for companies. In other words, firms which encourage telecommuting can save office space and therefore reduce their overheads. In addition, companies are less likely to suffer from lost working hours due to circumstances beyond the control of the company and the employee. Businesses which allow workers to log in at home, for instance, can ensure that a full working day is completed regardless of public transport delays, strikes or bad weather which can lead to time wasted in traffic jams instead of working in the office. Therefore, telecommuting could have considerable benefits if employees are not needed to be physically present in the office.

Furthermore, there are considerable benefits for the employees themselves. While avoiding rush hour commutes, workers can enjoy breakfast and evening meals with their families. This would boost not only their general well-being, but also their motivation and productivity. Professionals nowadays are under significant pressure and working from home would enable them to strike a balance between work and family life, which can, in turn, reduce stress and prevent burn-out. In many countries, for example, working parents are unable to spend enough time with their children, which can lead to family breakdown or a weakening of family relationships. Spending more time with families by working from home would reduce this.

In conclusion, telecommuting can have a number of benefits for both workers and companies. Therefore, I agree that employees should be encouraged to work from home more often as long as it is not necessary for them to be physically present in the workplace. (321)

Also, make sure you agree/disagree with the OPINION given in the question :

"Working from home SHOULD BE ENCOURAGED."

"Working FROM home" is not the same as "working AT home", so make sure you read the question carefully.

Hope this helps,

James

Teacher 提到...

Working FROM home = telecommuting (as explained in the question)

Noun 1. telecommuting - employment at home while communicating with the workplace by phone or fax or computer

(working FROM home implies you are still in contact with the office)

Working AT home = more general, any kind of work done at home
